Breakfast of Champions Explores Unconscious Bias and Psychological Safety
The December learning collaborative was a part 2 discussion on implicit bias with a focus on building psychological safety in diverse health care teams to promote maximum effectiveness and improve equity for patients. An impressive panel discussion was moderated by Patricia Flanagan, MD. Panelists included Rob Jones, Chief Empowerment Officer of T. Lee Associates who summarized key points from the September 9 Breakfast of Champions while Nelly Burdette, PsyD, Associate Vice President, Integrated Behavioral Health at Providence Community Health Centers, discussed cultural humility and the importance of intentional efforts of local and organizational leaders to build psychological safety to promote high-functioning teams, and the critical challenges with implicit/unconscious bias for diverse teams. Crystal Fairchild, MS Chief Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Human Resources Officer, Thundermist Health Center provided real-world examples of negative business impacts when unconscious bias remains unaddressed.
