August Clinical Strategy Meeting Focuses on Community Health Workers

In an informative August Clinical Strategy Meeting, system of care leaders, practice leaders, provider and health plan representatives focused on the topic intitled “Community Health Workers: How Are Practices and Systems of Care Approaching Effective and Sustainable Deployment of CHW’s in the Expanded Primary Care Team?” 

Panelists included:

  • Amy Katzen, MPP, JD Director of Policy and Strategy, RI EOHHS 
  • Marie Palumbo-Hayes, Vice President, Family Services of RI & Swanette Salazar, Certified Community Health Worker, Family Services of RI 
  • Nancy Silva, MBA, CCHW, Director of Health Initiatives, RIPIN 
  • Sarah Lawrence, PhD, Director Community Health Worker Association of RI 

Topics included embedding CHWs in primary care, personal success stories of integration, training pathways, and billing for CHW services. Reactants included Liz Fortin, LICSW, Director of Community Health Integration, South County Health; Gonzalo Paz-Soldan, MD, FAAP, CPE, Senior Medical Director- Clinical Transformation, BCBSRI; and Andrew Saal, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer, PCHC. The discussion reinforced how important CHWs can be for the engagement of patients and support of providers in patient care.
